According to the National Treasury, the government spends 10.9% of its total budget on social grants, which support about 15.2 million South Africans.
The Treasury estimates that spending on social protection will rise from R160bn in 2012 to R182bn by 2014.

This 10.9% figure has gone up from about 3% seven years ago. It will increase every year until the government provides the population with a decent education system and allows the private sector to start hiring people.
