There are two large advertisements in today's Business Day announcing the upcoming Enterprise Development awards. The awards are sponsored by the newspaper the Big News, the dti and Engen. Irritatingly the website address (www.bignews.co.za) doesn't work - which really is a poor show. But you can find out more information here. Apparently there is about R10billion out there for enterprise development (based on an average of 3% of NPAT across the economy). The question that remains to be seen is whether this money will be regarded as a donation or an investment, and if it is the former then how long will companies keep on donating.
On the subject of enterprise development and nation building. The Afrikanerbond has decided to throw its 2 cents into the pot.
Afrikanerbond chairperson Pierre Theron has appealed to prominent black businessmen to start an upliftment fund for black South Africans, similar to that launched in the 1930s to benefit poverty-stricken Afrikaners.
How right they are. Huge companies like Sanlam and Volkskas were created from this Ubuntu-like ideology. Why not use the same principles to build something for the whole of South Africa. All it needs is role-models like Patrice, Cyril, Saki and (if he behaves) Mzi.
Finally
Today is the day that my body decided to turn 40. It is a weird milestone and made even more exciting because Kath and I are expecting our first child at the end of the year (I'll post a lot more on this soon). And so I have posted up the song that Kath and I sort of agree is our song. Ollie Halsall - Stepping Out.mp3
